Year 3 Of Tutoring Was A Success

By August 13, 2019 September 13th, 2019 News, Uncategorized

We began our Tutoring Program in 2016 and year over year have continued to see stellar results for the students enrolled! We believe every child deserves an opportunity to thrive and our Tutoring Program is one way we help Foster Youth succeed. Through this program, we have provided over 6,600 one-on-one, in-home academic tutoring hours to over 180 Foster Youth from Pre-K to College to help them overcome learning gaps. Our tutors are providing invaluable instruction, stable adult relationships and acting as educational advocates. Nationally, Foster Youth have a higher likelihood of excessive absences, school changes, homelessness and incarceration than their non-foster-care peers. They are far less likely to graduate high school and move on to post-secondary education. Our Tutoring Program is designed to bridge these gaps and the results show Our Program Works!

In the 2018-2019 academic year we expanded our program from Norfolk to include Foster Youth in Chesapeake, Portsmouth and Virginia Beach, with a goal of serving 70% of school-aged Foster Youth in Hampton Roads within the next 3 years! Our average program investment per student, per academic year is $2,000. With a goal of serving 70% of Hampton Roads Foster Youth we expect program costs to exceed $700,000 annually in the near future.

The education of Foster Youth in Hampton Roads is an investment towards a better life for children who so desperately need it. Our program is free to all who participate and we rely on our Friends and Community Partners to help underwrite this essential investment in Foster Youth.
