What We Do

Our Focus:

Through community partnership, Tidewater Friends of Foster Care works to raise public awareness of the needs of youth in foster care, as well as provide resources to ensure that their time in care provides foster youth with an opportunity to grow and thrive.  Through our mission to recruit new foster families and support existing children and families in foster care, we provide the following support:

Outreach
We have partnered with Old Dominion University’s Business School and Communication and Theater Arts Department to develop a targeted marketing and media campaign for recruiting additional foster families, with a focus on placement stability, so kids do not end up bouncing from home to home within the foster care system.

Tutoring
We provide one-on-one, in-home academic tutoring to foster children who need extra support to be successful in school and this support continues after the children are reunited with their families.

Extracurricular Activities
We partner with local not profits, such as the YMCA, to support foster children’s participation in activities, including sports, fitness, the arts and other social activities that will enrich their childhoods, provide stress relief and enhance participation in the community.

Birthdays and Holidays
We partner with individuals and area businesses to provide birthday and holiday gifts for children in foster care, because they do not always get to be with their families during these special occasions.

Camperships
We send foster children to summer camps, with a particular focus on sending siblings who are placed in separate homes to camp together!
